Scope and Contents
James S. Calhoun resigned as Governor and departed from Santa Fe for his home in Georgia May 6, 1852, due to ill health, and died on the return journey. Before leaving New Mexico he turned over the executive office to Col. E. V. Sumner, Commander of the 9th Military Department. One proclamation is the single official document in the Territorial Archives of New Mexico issued by Sumner.
