 Archival Record

Scope and Content

From the Collection: Collection consists of the court clerk correspondence for the 1st Judicial District Court, the 3rd Judicial District Court, the 4th Judicial District Court, the 6th Judicial District Court, and the 8th Judicial District Court (1879-1970). The bulk of correspondence covers the years 1879-1912 and 1960-1970. Some correspondence for the 1st and 4th Judicial District Courts is located in letterpress books (1897-1911). Collection also includes criminal and civil cases for Bernalillo, Chavez, Colfax, Doña Ana, Eddy, Grant, Lincoln, Rio Arriba, San Juan, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Socorro, Taos, Union, and Valencia County District Courts (1853-1962). Cases include suits against the Atchinson, Tokepa, and Santa Fe Railroad, bankruptcy proceedings, and coal company cases. Also included are the U.S. District Court Case U.S. vs. Hope Community Ditch, et.al. (1933), and the Supreme Court of the United States case State of Arizona vs. State of California, et.al (1955). Criminal and civil cases are arranged alphabetically by county. Large gaps do exist between case files. Several cases within the 2nd and 3rd Judicial District Courts do not indicate a specific county seat. Miscellaneous records include a United States Grand Jury Report of the 1st Judicial District (1898), a list of suits filed for the Taos County District Court (1853-1854), and a court record fragment for the Valencia County District Court (1853).
