Scope and Content
From the Collection:
This collection contains files and reports generated by the Office of Institutional Research and its subsequent manifestations from the 1940s forward. The information in these files and reports arises from internal studies of the operation of the university. Additionally, beginning in the 1990s, the office administered various public service agencies allied with the university. The reports of some of those agencies are included in the collection.
An office for institutional research, known as the Institute of Research, was first established in 1954 and endured until 1960. (All dates are approximate.) From 1960 until 1970 the Assistant to the President of the university carried institutional research responsibilities. From 1970 to 1989 there was no administrative institutional research component. In 1989 an Office of Research and Professional Development was created; it lasted for two years. From 1991 to 1995 there was, again, no specific research office. Re-instituted in 1995, the research division has been known as the Office for Research and Planning (1995-1997), the Office for Administration and Planning (1997-1999), and the Office for Research, Planning, and Institutional Development (1999- ).
Administrators of the various research elements carried varying titles over the years, as follows.
