Scope and Contents

From the Collection: This collection was donated to the Lunder Research Center by Virginia Couse Leavitt, granddaughter of E. Irving Couse. A large portion of the collection contains the personal research accumulated by Leavitt over the course of a forty-plus year period, including genealogical research that aided her in writing Eanger Irving Couse: Image Maker for America. A large part of the collection includes her research around the career and paintings of her grandfather and the catalogue raisonné she compiled from that. This was all in an effort to comprehensively document the works of E. I. Couse, including information on where his paintings ended up, sales history, and exhibition history. The collection also houses Virginia Couse Leavitt’s correspondence with museums, collectors, and individuals as well as photographs documenting Couse’s paintings.
