Identifier: IAIAMS024

Scope and Contents note

MS-24, the Dave Warren Papers consist of four manuscript cases (2 cu. ft) of records related to his professional career as a historian, anthropologist, educator, education administrator, and expert on cultural affairs effecting American Indians, 1965-2002 [1968-1996, Bulk]. The majority of the records are related to his time at the Institute of American Indian Arts as the Director of the Research and Cultural Studies Development Center. The primary attraction to this collection is the material related to the 1979-1986 period of IAIA. During this time IAIA struggled and was nearly closed down by the Federal Government. Specific attention should be paid to the IAIA series, which details the moves of the All Indian Pueblo Council to reclaim the Santa Fe Indian School property from IAIA, the move of IAIA to the College of Santa Fe in 1980, and the legislative history of the school which resulted in a unique congressional charter passed in 1986. Another attraction to the collection is the final series, Jon C. Wade. Wade was president of IAIA during its toughest times, 1979-1986, and the records contained in this series were sent by Wade to Warren in 2002. The accompanying audio interview is very illuminating and sheds light on many of those issues surrounding IAIA during that time period.
