Scope and Content

From the Collection: The Institute of American Indian Arts Oral History collection consists of digital audio recordings, digital video recordings, transcripts, and associated documents related to interviews conducted since 2007. The content of the interviews is related to the history and background of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Narrators included former IAIA faculty James McGrath and Charles Dailey; Former IAIA Student and current faculty Linda Lomahaftewa; Former IAIA staff member Robert Harcourt; and the sons of George A. Boyce, the first superintendent of IAIA.

Biographical / Historical

George Boyce Jr. is the son of Dr. George A. Boyce, the first superintended of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1962-1967. Boyce Jr. grew up in Window Rock, Arizona while his father worked as Superintendent of Navajo and Hopi schools and later moved with his family to Brigham City, Utah when his father was appointed Superintendent of Intermountain Indian School. After leaving home, he worked in the credit industry for several years prior to going into telecommunications in Phoenix, Arizona. Robert Boyce, several years younger than his brother George, is also the son of Dr. George A. Boyce. Born in Gallup, New Mexico Robert too lived in Window Rock and Brigham City prior to enlisting in the United State Air Force. He worked in several industries prior to landing a position in gaming in Las Vegas, Nevada. Boyce continued his career in managing tribal organizations in Nevada and California for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Abstract

The bulk of the interview provides details regarding their father’s career in the Bureau of Indian Affairs; Navajo and Hopi School Superintendent, Superintendent of Intermountain Indian School, and the first Superintendent of the Institute of American Indian Arts until his retirement in 1967. Information regarding the difficulties of starting IAIA, Boyce’s philosophies in Indian arts, and his career with IAIA is the most helpful part of the interview. Also discussed is Robert and George Boyce Jr.’s childhood experiences on the Navajo reservation and family life, as well as their father’s involvement in the Navajo Code Talkers project and the Navajo Arts and Crafts Guild in Window Rock.
