William Johnson Papers, 1973-1999

File — Box: Placeholder container text, Folder: 19

Scope and Content

From the Collection: The William Johnson Papers consist of administrative records, board minutes, manuscripts, slides, prints, video, periodicals, and ephemera related to the history of IAIA and his role as the Chairman of the Board of IAIA and the IAIA foundation. Notable subjects include the privatization of the Institute in 1986 by the U.S. Congress according to the Higher Education Act, transfer of 140 acres of Rancho Viejo property to IAIA in 1991 for their campus, the establishment of a permanent IAIA museum in the old federal building on Cathedral Place in downtown Santa Fe, the construction of the new IAIA campus, and activities of the IAIA foundation.

The collection is particularly helpful in understanding the workings of the new 501c3 Board of Trustees established in 1986. Budgets and financial records tell of the many troubles IAIA faced in the 80s and 90s due to congressional appropriation cuts. The ephemera and publications describe the exhibits and activities of the Institute. The Foundation records, which Johnson was instrumental in establishing, describe the capital campaign and fund raising efforts exercised to fund the construction the new campus, finished in 2000 as well as leasing and occupying the federal building for the National Collection of Contemporary Indian Art at the IAIA Museum.
