Scope and Content
Collection consists of materials from the Estancia News Herald. Material in this collection covers the late 1930s and 1940s and includes financial and legal documents, correspondence, ledger books, news releases (i.e. World War II), handbills, circulars, and advertising material (mostly dealing with the newspaper business and agriculture). Some material concern railroads in New Mexico. Collection contains Torrance County, New Mexico, school papers. There is no container level finding aid available for the 10 boxes.

Corporate History
The town of Estancia is located in Torrance County in the center of the state. The town was a trading center for farmers. When the New Mexico Central Railway was built south from Santa Fe to join the lines of the El Paso Northeastern, Estancia became the most important town between Santa Fe and El Paso. In 1905 Estancia became the site of the area's first newspaper. In the years immediately following several other papers were published here. In January 1912, J.A. Constant was the editor of a daily called the Morning News. Later Constant and his wife renamed the paper the Estancia News Herald and continued to publish he paper well into the late 1940s.
