Organizational Information

St. John's College Search and Rescue(SJSAR) was established in 1971 as a college program by a group of student volunteers. It very quickly partnered with the New Mexico Department of Public Safety to provide search and rescue efforts to anyone injured in remote areas of the state. St. John's college provided funding for the establishment for over thirty years as members from the organization participated in approximately thirty missions a year, becoming regionally acclaimed in their work. In the early 2000s SJSAR decided to cut ties with community member in its organization, as it was established with the purpose of being a college run and staffed institution. The number of volunteers dropped as a result, and St. John’s Search and Rescue ceased to operate by 2008. In 2002 community members formed the Atalaya Search and Rescue. Atalaya Search and Rescue uses the old facilities of St. John's Search and Rescue, and the college and new organization have good relations to this day, as students are both allowed and encouraged to join the organization.
