Scope and Content
Collection consists of personal and professional papers of Thomas E. Chávez as well as some papers of his father Antonio Chávez. Included are letters, correspondence, newspaper articles pertaining to their careers, professional papers and notes. Additionally, collection contains Thomas E. Chávez's school and professional notes, manuscripts, and proofs of published works.

Biographical Information
Thomas E. Chávez is a historian with a Ph. D. from the University of New Mexico. In December of 2004, he retired as the Executive Director of the National Hispanic Culture Center in Albuquerque. Before that he was director of the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico for twenty-one years. Chávez is a native of New Mexico and is married to Celia López. Chávez has two daughters, Nicolas Marie and Christel Angélica (who passed away in 2002).
Antonio Chávez, born 1926 in Santa Fe, was married to Marilyn Sprowl. He attended Santa Fe High School. Following service in World War II, he received a B.A. from Kent State University and J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Antonio Chávez worked at Pojoaque High School, Lockheed Aircraft Factory (Los Angeles), and eventual in various legal positions in Los Angeles. After 12 years as a Municipal Court Judge in Los Angeles, he retired to Albuquerque. He died in Las Cruces in 2013 and is buried at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
