Biographical / Historical

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) was a branch of the United States Department of Defense which primarily dealt with ensuring public safety in the event of a nuclear disaster. The department was founded in 1961, replacing the Office of Civil Defense Mobilization and was abolished in 1979, its responsibilities being given to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In 1961, John F. Kennedy became the first president to talk publicly about civil defense, justifying it as an insurance for the civilian population. Alongside this, the Kennedy administration saw an increase in the amount of effort put into the public education programs of the OCD. This folder contains a selection of Civil Defense and Los Alamos National Lab publications compiled by the Los Alamos Disaster and Defense Organization.
