Scope and Contents

The Salvo is the ship’s newsletter, printed on board the ship and under the direction of the Commanding Officer. It contains news from inter-vessel sports events, information about events on and around the ship, and other pertinent and/or interesting information. The four issues in this collection are all from 1939. Publication location changes with port location. The pamphlet on “The Prevention of Venereal Diseases” was part of a larger initiative by the U.S. Military to prevent venereal diseases in the army and navy. The pamphlet contains advice on what venereal disease is, how to prevent it, and what to do if you get it. Note on the back of the pamphlet: "USS New Mexico 11-29-37--5M"

Biographical / Historical

The U.S.S. New Mexico was a battleship that served the United States Navy from its commission in May 1918 until its decommission in July 1946. The lead ship in its class, it had a crew of 58 officers and 1,026 enlisted when it was made, which increased to 128 officers and 1,850 enlisted by 1945 due to wartime improvements. The ship’s high performance in various naval exercises earned it the moniker “Queen of the Fleet”. The U.S.S. New Mexico served in the Pacific during World War II, and was present in Tokyo Bay for Japan’s formal surrender in 1945.
