Institutional History

An invitation from a Santa Fe writers’ group drew Walter L. Goodwin and his press from Rydal, Pennsylvania to New Mexico in 1933. In the East, Goodwin was a production manager and book designer for the J.B. Lippincott Company. As an aside he operated his own press, where he printed the works of a cooperative publishing group under the Arrow Editions imprint and his own beautiful but affordable small books. Goodwin’s work caught the attention of writers Alice Corbin Henderson and Haniel Long who urged him to move The Rydal Press to Santa Fe where they and others were planning a similar cooperative venture called Writers’ Editions. Walter Goodwin’s Rydal Press was originally set up in Tesuque in 1933 in an old health sanitarium. The press eventually moved to Canyon Road in Santa Fe and specialized in finely printed limited edition works and produced award-winning regional literature until 1941. Goodwin sold the Rydal Press in 1941 to Dale Bullock and then left New Mexico in 1946. The Rydal Press stayed in business until 1976 with its focus becoming commercial rather than literary. Clark Kimball revived the press for a second run of private publishing in the 1980’s.
