History

The Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts was established by New Mexico Arts Committee in 1974 to honor lifetime achievement and support of the arts in New Mexico. The first Governor's Awards were given in 1974 to Maria Martinez and Georgia O'Keeffe. Since then a variety of artists; weavers, painters, dancers, sculptors, musicians, poets, playwrights, potters, and storytellers, have been given awards annually. These awards are administered by the Governor's Awards Committee of the New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs.
