Institutional History

When Santa Fe was founded, official records show that an inn, or la fonda, was located off the plaza. In 1821, Captain William Becknell opened the trade from Missouri to Santa Fe and found lodging at La Fonda on the plaza. La Fonda hotel still occupies the southeast corner of the Plaza. The current La Fonda was built in 1922 on the site of the prevous inns. In 1925, it was acquired by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, which leased it to the Fred Harvey Company. From 1926 to 1968, La Fonda was one of the Harvey Houses. Since 1968, it has been locally owned and operated and has maintained its historic integrity and architectural authenticity. It has previously been known as the United States Hotel and the Exchange Hotel.
