Historical Information

The Codex Sierra was painted in the mid-16th century, in Santa Catarina Texupa in the Mixteca Baja region in Oaxaca. The codex is a ledger, listing important town expenditures during the years 1550-1564. Each page of the manuscript is marked with the corresponding year, and the expenditures (in pesos) are shown as hieroglyphs at the left. The descriptions of each item in European script are a mix of Spanish and Nahuatl, the language of the Aztec Empire.

The original manuscript is housed at the Biblioteca José María Lafragua, at the Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico.
