Institutional History
The Santa Fe Center for Photography, initially the Santa Fe Gallery of Photography, was first organized in April 1977 by a group of local photographers including Ray Belcher, David Howard, Boyd Nicholl, Susan Steffy, and Rich Wilder. The purpose of the organization was to bring photographic exhibits of high quality, by lesser known photographers, to Santa Fe. The gallery was located at 104 W. San Francisco Street. In the fall of 1981, the name of this organization was changed to the Santa Fe Center for Photography, and its purpose expanded to include lectures, workshops, and a small bookshop. The Santa Fe Center for Photography has since changed its name to the Center (www.visitcenter.org/).
