Scope and Content

This collection contains the personal papers of Neil Isbin and the papers relating to his work with "Common Bond" a newsletter for the gay and lesbian community, his activism in the New Mexico Lesbian and Gay Political Alliance, and his and others efforts to pass gay rights legislation in New Mexico, SB 91. There is correspondence, petitions, newspaper clippings, essays, notes on his thoughts on issues, photos of family and friends, financial and health statements, lists of members in the organizations, and letters from politicians such as Walter Mondale (1928-), Pete Domenici(1934-), and Bruce King (1924-) regarding their positions on gay and lesbian rights. Also included our his college papers.

Biographical Information

Neil Isbin was born November 24, 1951 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended college at Rice University in Texas. He moved to New Mexico in 1980. He died in Albuquerque, New Mexico August 9, 1996. Isbin was a longtime activist for civil rights and gay and lesbian rights. While in college he was active in voter-registration drives and programs for students with learning disabilities. He graduated with an electrical engineering degree from the Univeristy of Texas in 1984. He worked for Sperry Flight Systems in Albuquerque. He wrote for OUT!, a magazine about gay and lesbian issues, was President of the New Mexico Lesbian and Gay Rights Political Alliance and was on the board for "Common Bond", a magazine published in Albuquerque, and led the fight for the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 91, gay and lesbian rights legislation in New Mexico.
