Institutional Information

Montezuma Baptist College was founded in 1919 when the town of Las Vegas, New Mexico gifted to the Baptist State Convention of New Mexico the hotel property at Montezuma Hot Springs, five miles north of East Las Vegas. The understanding was that a college would be established. The first session of the college began in September, 1922, under the direction of Rev. Layton Maddox. Enrollment reached a total of 341 students in its second year. It was the only denominational college south of Denver to offer an AB degree. The college graduated its first class at the close of the summer term, 1925. Montezuma Baptist College closed in 1929 because of the financial difficulties.
