Historical Note
The preservation of the mission at Old Acoma was a project first conceived in September 1988 by architect and Santo Domingo Pueblo member, Jim A. Coriz, Jr. After asking a few people to assist him, Coriz, unfortunately, died in January 1989. At that time the Mission at Old Acoma Foundation, Inc. was organized for the purpose of assisting the Acoma People to complete the renovation of its Mission Church and Convent begun by Coriz. The foundation also refers to this project as "A Circle of Hands" because it brings together the community of Acoma, its Governor and Tribal Council, and the Foundation and its donors for the purpose of preserving a National Historic Landmark. The work was completed in December 1991 and the disbandment of the foundation followed in May 1992.
