Institutional History
The Apostolic Vicariate of New Mexico was created on July 19, 1850 and three years later, it became a full diocese. In response to the territory's large Catholic population, the diocese was elevated to an archdiocese on February 12, 1875. Two of its early twentieth century archbishops were John Baptist Pitaval (1858-1928) who headed the archdiocese from 1909-1918 and Anthony Daeger (1872-1932) who was archbishop from 1919-1932.
