Scope and Content

The collection consists of the architectural drawings of Myrtle Stedman and Wilfred Stedman, her husband. They are kept together with the drawings of William Lumpkin [the William Lumpkin Collection].

The material in this box itemizes the drawings, the houses, and biographical information concerning the couple.

Biographical / Historical

Myrtle Stedman met her husband, painter Wilfred Stedman, while studying art in Houston, Texas. She and her husband moved to Tesuque in 1934. By 1948, Stedman was one of the first and only licensed women contractors in New Mexico to build traditional adobe homes. With the aid of her husband, Stedman authored Adobe Architecture and Adobe Remodeling and Fireplaces. She has also authored her autobiography A House Not Made of Hands and a book of spiritual poetry entitled Of One Mind.
