Final Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) Record, 1933-1934

 File — Box: 2, Folder: 27

Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series: Correspondence, notes, and reports related to Baumann's position as regional coordinator of the thirteenth region (consisting of New Mexico and Arizona) of the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) from 1933 to 1934. The PWAP was one of the first New Deal projects undertaken by the federal government during the Great Depression to employ out-of-work artists, who created art for display in and outside public and government buildings. As regional coordinator, Baumann was responsible for finding and vetting potential artists and for monitoring and reporting on their progress. [Note that although Baumann himself refers to this work in his writings and record keeping as being for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), he in fact worked for the PWAP, which predated the WPA.]
