Scope and Contents

Viceroy Velasco and his official Pardo received Juan Martinez de Montoyas "Certification of Services," 6 October 1606, San Gabriel, New Mexico, compiled by Don Juan de Oñate. Martinez de Montoyas exploits are given. He was born in Navalagamella, two leagues from San Lorenzo de Escorial. It is repeated that His Majesty bestowed nobility upon Martinez de Montoya, etc. It icludes expenses and equipment Martinez used for his journey into New Mexico. It decribes his journeys to the Zuni and Hopi Pueblos and the South Sea. It notes that he fought against the Apache Indians. On page 16, the same document continues, Oñate declares Martinez de Montoya a "Conquistador" and gives him the Pueblo of Santiago [one of the Jemez Pueblos] for three lives. Document reiterates that nobility was bestowed. On page 17, the same document continues, Oñate describes Martinez de Montoya physically. The "Certificate of Services" is signed by Juan Gutierrez Bocanegra, Secretary to Governor Oñate.
