Scope and Contents

Papers and correspondence concerning the archaeological area of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. Topics include: the ownership of lands in and around Chaco Canyon; the National Park Service and Chaco Canyon National Monument; dendrochronology research and dates; sites in Chaco Canyon like Chetro Ketl and Pueblo Bonito; the School of American Research and University of New Mexico's summer field schools in Chaco Canyon; the Pueblo Bonito Expedition of the National Geographic Society; etc. Includes the following papers: handwritten "Chaco Canyon Notes" by Edgar D. Cahill; a timeline of dendrochronology dates from Chaco Canyon; lists of students at the Chaco Canyon field schools; reports on archaeological work at the site of Chetro Ketl in 1929 and 1931; a list of "Sherd and Unclassified Material from Chetro Ketl 1930; a journal titled "Chaco Canyon - 1930"; a "Catalog of Tree Ring Material Collected from Chetro Ketl, June and July, 1930" by Florence Hawley; a list and descriptions of "Photographs Made at Chaco Canyon"; and more. Also includes two permits from the U.S. Department of the Interior granting the School of American Research permission to conduct archaeological excavations at Puye Cliff Dwellings in 1926 and 1927-1930.
