Scope and Contents

Correspondence with representatives of the United States federal government, including from the Department of the Interior, Office of Indian Affairs (now the Bureau of Indian Affairs), General Land Office, Forest Service, National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Treasury, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Labor. Topics include: the Antiquities Act of 1906; permits for archaeological work; archaeological surveys; New Mexico's national parks and monuments such as Chaco Canyon, Gran Quivira, Carlsbad Caverns, Bandelier, El Morro, and Pecos; the Santa Fe and Gila National Forests; Puye Cliff Dwellings and Santa Clara Pueblo/Kha'p'o Owingeh; the proposed Pajarito National Park; a federal building in Santa Fe; child welfare; the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Federal Writers' Project; Native American policy, rights, and education; Pueblo participation in the Santa Fe Fiesta; Mesa Verde National Park; land ownership of archaeological and historical sites; legislative bills; and various administrative and archaeological matters. Includes correspondence with Lansing B. Bloom, Paul A. F. Walter, Benigno Cardenas Hernandez, Arno Berthold Cammerer, Andrieus Aristieus Jones, Evon Z. Vogt, Charles H. Burke, Frank Pinkley, Jesse L. Nusbaum, Willis T. Lee, John Morrow, H. P. Cammerer, Albert G. Simms, John J. Dempsey, Albert B. Fall, Thomas Benton Catron, William Boone Douglass, and others. Also includes archaeological permits for excavations at the following locations: in the Rito de los Frijoles canyon and adjacent areas in the Jemez National Forest from 1910-1913; at Puye Cliff Dwellings on the Santa Clara Indian Reservation in 1916; on ruins in the Santa Fe National Forest and Bandelier National Monument from 1926-1928; and near the Three Circle Ranch on the Mimbres River in Gila National Forest from 1928-1930.
