Papers and correspondence related to the following people and organizations: Frederick W. Shipley; the Southwest Society of the Archaeological Institute of America; and the Smithsonian Institution. Includes the following: First, correspondence with Frederick W. Shipley concerning the St. Louis Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, the relationship between the AIA and the School of American Archaeology/School of American Research, funding for Hewett's archaeological work at the site of Quiriguá in Guatemala, and Art and Archaeology magazine. Second, papers and correspondence concerning the Southwest Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, which was headquartered in Los Angeles, California, and the Southwest Museum of the American Indian (now part of the Autry Museum of the American West). And third, correspondence with representatives of the Smithsonian Institution and Bureau of American Ethnology, such as Frederick Webb Hodge, William Henry Holmes, and Charles D. Walcott, concerning the School of American Archaeology, Southwestern archaeology and anthropology, Mesa Verde National Park, funding for archaeological work in Guatemala, and various archaeological and museum matters.
