Scope and Contents

Correspondence concerning the School of American Research. Topics include: summer field schools; archaeological work at Chaco Canyon and in the Jemez area; partnerships with the University of New Mexico and University of Arizona; Archaeological Institute of America business; books and publications; lectures; and various archaeological and museum matters. Includes correspondence with Byron Cummings, George Woodbury, John Peabody Harrington, John Sloan, Albert Billheimer, Ralph Van Deman Magoffin, Maud Durlin Sullivan, Helen Rees Clifford, Spencer Lee Rogers, Jesse L. Nusbaum, and others. Also includes a copy of a permit from the National Park Service granting the School of American Research and University of New Mexico joint permission to conduct archaeological excavations at the site of Chetro Ketl in Chaco Canyon for three years, 1929-1932, with certain conditions; as well as a memorandum of a conference held in 1930 between National Park Service senior leadership and Hewett concerning Chaco Canyon.
