Scope and Contents

Correspondence, permits, memorandums, financial records, bulletins, and other papers concerning the School of American Archaeology/School of American Research and Museum of New Mexico's archaeological excavations in New Mexico and Guatemala. Topics include: archaeological excavations at Chaco Canyon, in the Jemez area, and at Puye Cliff Dwellings in New Mexico, and at Quiriguá in Guatemala; summer field schools; the Antiquities Act of 1906; federal permits for archaeological work; plans for the Fred Harvey Company's Indian Detours and a Harvey House at Puye; expense accounts, financial records, laborer payrolls from excavations; Bandelier National Monument; and proposals for a Pajarito National Park in New Mexico. Includes correspondence with Hunter R. Clarkson, Odd S. Halseth, Wesley Bradfield, Charles Fletcher Lummis, Lansing B. Bloom, Kenneth Milton Chapman, Frederick Webb Hodge, Neil Merton Judd, Paul A. F. Walter, John Morrow, Adela C. Holmquist, and others. Also includes the following: a permit from the U.S. Department of the Interior granting Hewett and the School of American Research permission to conduct archaeological excavations at Puye from 1927-1930; lists of students enrolled at the summer field schools; a report on the "Chaco Canyon Investigation, 1937" about conditions at the University of New Mexico field school at Chaco Canyon; a permit from the U.S. Department of the Interior granting the School of American Research and Museum of New Mexico permission to conduct archaeological work in Chaco Canyon at Chetro Ketl and Casa Rinconada for two years from 1921-1922; a report on "The Physiographic Changes Taking Place in Chaco Canyon and their Effects" by Reginald G. Fisher; a copy of a bill from the U.S. House of Representatives in 1901 (H. R. 13071) for a proposed Cliff Dwellers' National Park in New Mexico; a 1901 report titled "A Proposed New National Park" by Edgar L. Hewett; a copy of an "Archaeological Map of the Proposed National Park of the Cliff Cities" from 1914; and bulletins of the National Parks Association.
