Scope and Contents

Papers and correspondence concerning a controversy in Santa Fe over the School of American Archaeology and Hewett's position as Director. Includes correspondence and newspaper articles by individuals pushing for Hewett's removal, such as owner of the Santa Fe New Mexican Bronson M. Cutting, anthropologists Alfred M. Tozzer and Franz Boas, and president of the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce Harry H. Dorman. Also includes correspondence, minutes, resolutions, petitions, telegrams, and newspaper articles in support of Hewett by citizens and organizations in Santa Fe and other areas of New Mexico, members of the Archaeological Institute of America, and Charles Fletcher Lummis. Also includes minutes of the meetings of the Managing Committee of the School of American Archaeology in October and December of 1913, which discuss the controversy.
