Scope and Contents

Correspondence concerning the following topics: the School of American Research; the Museum of New Mexico; the University of New Mexico; the University of Southern California; the Coronado Cuarto Centennial; the Hewetts' travels and health; archaeological work in New Mexico, Ecuador, and Guatemala; New Mexico's Spanish archives; and the transfer of ownership of certain archaeological sites, such as Chaco Canyon, Abó, Jemez, Pecos, Quarai, and Gran Quivira, from the Museum of New Mexico and University of New Mexico to the National Park Service. Includes correspondence with Wayne L. Mauzy, Paul A. F. Walter, Aberdeen O. Bowden, Reginald G. Fisher, James Fulton Zimmerman, Barbara Freire-Marreco Aitken, E. E. Wentworth Layton, Gustave Baumann, and others. Also includes the following: correspondence with Rene d'Harnoncourt, manager of the U.S. Department of the Interior's Indian Arts and Crafts Board, concerning the loan of pottery specimens from the Museum of New Mexico for the Native American art exhibit at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco, California; correspondence concerning CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and WPA (Works Progress Administration) projects at the archaeological sites of Pecos, Quarai, and Abó; a memo by Hester Jones on "Ideas on Educational Department of the State Museum"; correspondence with Edwin N. Ferdon about his archaeological work in Ecuador; and correspondence with Bertha P. Dutton, Hulda Ruth Hobbs, and Barbara H. L. Loomis about their archaeological work at Tajumulco in Guatemala.
