Scope and Contents

Papers and correspondence concerning the following topics: the School of American Archaeology; the Museum of New Mexico; the Archaeological Institute of America; plans for the Panama-California Exposition in San Diego, California; archaeological work at the site of Quiriguá in Guatemala; cooperative work with the Bureau of American Ethnology; and various archaeological and museum matters. Includes correspondence with Frederick Webb Hodge, Alice C. Fletcher, Mitchell Carroll, Kenneth Milton Chapman, Neil Merton Judd, Jesse L. Nusbaum, Ellsworth Huntington, Barbara Freire-Marreco, Julian Martinez, and Anna L. Wolcott. Includes correspondence about the so-called "Spinden Affair" over disagreements between staff of the School of American Archaeology and Herbert Joseph Spinden of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and a purported attempt to take a Carl Lotave painting from the Palace of the Governors. Also includes papers and correspondence from Barbara Freire-Marreco, such as: a copy of a letter to the U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs about the "Pueblo Indians of New Mexico"; a report on her anthropological research at Santa Clara Pueblo/Kha'p'o Owingeh; correspondence about Pueblo government and politics, as well as a meeting of a General Council of Pueblo governors and leaders; and a Spanish copy (in Freire-Marreco's hand) of the council's petition to U.S. Congress.
