Scope and Contents

Papers and correspondence concerning the following topics: the School of American Archaeology; the Museum of New Mexico; the Archaeological Institute of America; the Bureau of American Ethnology; Carl Lotave's paintings in the Palace of the Governors; Mesa Verde National Park; and archaeological work in the Southwestern United States, Mexico, and Guatemala. Includes correspondence with Alice C. Fletcher, John R. McFie, Virginia McClurg, Frederick Webb Hodge, Neil Merton Judd, and Edward Herbert Thompson. Also includes the following: a "Proposed Plan for Cooperative Work Between the Bureau of American Ethnology and the School of American Archaeology for the Field Season, May to October inclusive, 1910"; passports and permits from the governments of Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala allowing Hewett to visit and conduct archaeological work at sites such as Quiriguá and Copán; and correspondence with representatives of the United Fruit Company such as Minor C. Keith concerning permission and financial support for archaeological excavations at the site of Quirigua in Guatemala.
