Scope and Contents

Papers and correspondence concerning the following topics: the School of American Archaeology; the Archaeological Institute of America; plans for archaeological work at the site of Palenque in Mexico; and various archaeological and professional matters. Includes correspondence with F. W. Putnam, Jesse Walter Fewkes, Alice C. Fletcher, Charles P. Bowditch, H. Rushton Fairclough, Lucy E. Peabody, and John Peabody Harrington. Also includes the following: copies of an agreement between Charles P. Bowditch, W. K. Bixby, and the Archaeological Institute of America concerning funding for Palenque excavations; Spanish and English translated versions of a "Letter of Concession from the Department of Public Instruction, Mexico" describing the permitted activities of the Archaeological Institute of America in the states of Chiapas, Tobasco, Campeche, and Yucatan over the period of five years; and a letter from Hewett to William H. Andrews, member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the Territory of New Mexico, recommending that the Statehood bill include a clause granting 200,000 acres to the Museum of New Mexico and School of American Archaeology.
