Scope and Contents

Correspondence concerning a proposed excavation of the ruins of Palenque in Mexico and the subsequent controversy between Hewett and Charles P. Bowditch of the Archaeological Institute of America over the plans and funding for the excavation. Includes copies of an agreement between Charles P. Bowditch, William K. Bixby, and the Archaeological Institute of America concerning funding for excavations at Palenque; as well as an English translation of a "Letter of Concession from the Department of Public Instruction, Mexico" describing the permitted activities of the Archaeological Institute of America in the states of Chiapas, Tobasco, Campeche, and Yucatan over the period of five years.
