Scope and Contents

Correspondence concerning the following topics: the Antiquities Act of 1906; the Archaeological Institute of America; Hewett's appointment as Fellow in American Archaeology for the year 1906; his survey of Mesa Verde; his archaeological work in New Mexico, Colorado, and Mexico; and the creation of the School of American Archaeology. Includes correspondence from the US Department of the Interior, General Land Office, and Forest Service, such as letters and permits from Secretary of the Interior Ethan Allen Hitchcock, Commissioner of the General Land Office William A. Richards, and Secretary of Agriculture James Wilson authorizing Hewett to conduct archaeological excavations in Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, and Sandoval counties in New Mexico and on national forest reserves in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Also includes correspondence with Jesse Walter Fewkes, F. W. Putnam, William Henry Holmes, Charles P. Bowditch, Thomas D. Seymour, Francis W. Kelsey, and others.
