Scope and Contents

Correspondence, telegrams, memoranda, minutes, and assorted documents concerning the development, lobbying, and passage of the Antiquities Act of 1906. Many documents relate to Hewett's actions as Secretary of the Joint Committee on Preservation of American Antiquities of the Archaeological Institute of America and the American Anthropological Association. Includes a significant amount of correspondence with representatives of the Smithsonian Institution and the U.S. Department of the Interior, particularly with Commissioner of the General Land Office William A. Richards, as well as with John F. Lacey, Carl Vilhelm Hartman, Charles P. Bowditch, Charles D. Walcott, A. L. Kroeber, and others. Also includes a copy of Hewett's 1904 memorandum on the "Historic and Prehistoric Ruins of the Southwest and their Preservation," which was published as a Department of the Interior Circular.
