Scope and Content

From the Collection: The collection consists of primarily fiscal, operational, and other bookstore related business files accumulated over fifty years of gallery and bookstore operations (boxes 4, 15-47; 49-56; 64). In addition to personal papers (boxes 1-3), Joseph and Diana Stein were also active in the Historical Society of New Mexico (bulk boxes 8-9), in downtown Las Vegas restoration projects, the United World College, and New Mexico history topics (boxes 5-9; 65), and in supporting local history writers (box 13). The collection includes materials and correspondence with many authors such as Fred Nolan, Richard Bradford, S. Omar Barker, Marc Simmons, Ann Nolan Clark (boxes 10-11), Lawrence Clark Powell (boxes 61; 66-67) and materials from illustrator Herman Ilfeld Bacharach (box 12). The Steins also collected New Mexico cookery material (box 14), a post card collection, photos, and a small Jewish Library Collection are also part of the collection (boxes 57-60). The collection has retained much of the order as received by the institution.
