From the Collection:
Collection includes correspondence of Paul A. F. Walter while he served as Secretary of the School of American Archaeology and later the School of American Research during the years 1913-1917, 1921-1922, and 1925-1928. Also included is Walter's Correspondence while he served as President of the New Mexico Historical Society in 1933-1934 and later from 1936 to 1941.
Other items in the collection are related to Walter's official functions within the School of American Research or the Historical Society of New Mexico such as correspondence dealing with the New Mexico Board of Exposition Managers of the Panama-California Exposition, the Alice C. Fletcher Fellowship, The Southwestern Cultural Center of Santa Fe, and the Memorial Conference in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Adolph F. Bandelier.
There are reports, notes, and correspondences of the Museum of New Mexico from 1938 to 1942 concerning branch museums, state monuments, the WPA, andexhibits, Acquisitions, and publications, etc.
Contained within this collection are six photostatic copies of original manuscripts date from the Spanish and Mexican periods of New Mexico history. The original documents are file at the New Mexico State Records Center and Archive in Santa Fe. As detailed below of the documents have been translated by Marc Simmons and published in El Palacio. Supporting documents include a typed draft of the Foreward written by Bruce T. Ellis for use in one the aforementioned articles and a photostatic copy of a statement signed by Adolph F. A. Bandelier on 11 August 1888 stating that he had received for examination three of the original manuscript documents from E. L. Bartlett. Notation on an old containing envelope for these manuscripts states that they belonged to D. J. Miller, Chief Clerk and Translator in the U. S surveyor General's Office of Santa Fe.
Photostatic copies of the original documents are in hand written Spanish.
