Scope and Content

From the Collection: Collection consists of the personal papers of Chávez. Includes typed manuscripts, letters sent and received, certificates, biographical materials, and newspaper clippings. Among the letters are correspondence with various publishers and Chávez's friend Frederick L. Grillo, as well as letters received from individuals such as Thornton Wilder, Paul Horgan, Erna Fergusson, Peter Hurd, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Collection also includes materials concerning the publication of Chávez's poem "The Virgin of Port Llegat" and Salvador Dali's painting "The Madonna of Port Llegat;" several Spanish documents concerning New Mexico; and a guest register book from the Montezuma Hotel in Santa Fe with signatures from 1899-1900, and 1921-1922. Additions to the collection come from the 2010 symposium celebrations the 100th birthday of Chávez. There is a condolence letter from Bill and Hilary Clinton.
