Established May 10, 1910; transferred to the Dept. of Commerce by executive order, June 4, 1925 and effective July 1, 1926; transferred from the Dept. of Commerce to the Dept. of Interior by Executive order dated February 22, 1934; abolished by the Omnibus Consolidated Rescissions and Appropriations Act of 1996 (110 Stat. 1321), April 26, 1996, which appropriated $64 million to cover closure expenses.
