Biography

William Henry "Heinrich" Shultz (15 July 1913 - 26 May 2006) was born and raised in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. His father was a violinist, and from an early age, Shultz loved classical music. He received his undergraduate and Master's degrees from the University of Chicago, and then taught in a private high school in Chicago. He also lived briefly in New York City. He came to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1943 and taught high school students at the Indian Boarding School from 1943-1957. After leaving New Mexico, Heinrich traveled abroad, and lived for a period of time in Italy. On his return to the United States, he worked for the University of Chicago Library, and was the Resident Master of Coulter House in the Burton-Judson dormitories of the University. Medical student, David O. Staats was a resident in Coulter House 1972-1974, and following a long friendship, Dr. Staats acquired Shultz' mementos of the Albuquerque Indian School, eventually donating them to UNM.
