Scope and Content

The collection of film negatives and photographic prints is comprised of job file envelopes labeled with client names, primarily from the 1940s to 1970s. Two unprocessed boxes have been designated as of special interest (numbers 35 and 36) for their subject grouped folders of people, landscapes, and events in Taos, New Mexico. The 38 boxes shelved in B16 have received initial processing.

Biography

Martin Shaffer was born in Mountainair, New Mexico, in 1913. His parents, Clem and Lena Shaffer, ran the Shaffer Hotel; his mother also ran a photography studio. Martin attended the University of New Mexico and then moved to Taos in 1932. He was a painter, iron smith, and professional photographer deeply involved with many aspects of Taos cultural and daily life. He ran his photography business there until his death in 1985.
