H. Ida Curry began visiting the west in 1927 at the age of 58. This collection consists of her letters, stories, poetry, describing her experiences in Montana, New Mexico, and Wyoming. It also includes photos of her, and brief biographical essays about her.

Biographical Note

Hannah Ida Curry was known as H. Ida Curry. She was born January, 1868 and died November 27, 1964. She began her career in child welfare work in New York, and later moved to Washington D.C. As a great social pioneer of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, she was one of the founders and first president of the Child Welfare League of America. She devoted thirty years to improving services to children in rural counties. She developed a program to remove children from orphanages and place them in foster homes. She participated in all the White House Conferences on children and youth from 1909 to 1960. In 1927 she began visiting the west on vacations. She first visited the Spear ranch in Sheridan, Wyoming. In subsequent years she visited Santa Fe, Taos, and areas elsewhere in New Mexico, Wyoming and Montana. She wrote letters and "chapters" describing her experiences ranching and sightseeing.
